Insurance Benefits of Impact Window & Doors

The 2021 hurricane season is only two months away. Many Tampa Bay area residents are already prepping their emergency kits, evacuation routes, and plywood for boarding up their home’s windows. However, before you head out to the hardware store to buy that plywood, there is a better way to protect your home and save you money - impact-resistant windows.

Installing impact windows and doors at your home offers several benefits. They provide excellent hurricane protection, protect your home from break-ins, and help lower your utility bills. But did you know that impact windows and doors can also lower your home insurance costs?

Insurance Benefits of Impact Windows and Doors

In 2015, the State of Florida passed Statute 627.0628 that reads:

“a rate filing for residential property insurance must include actuarially reasonable discounts, credits, or other rate differentials, or appropriate reductions in deductibles, for properties on which fixtures or construction techniques demonstrated to reduce the amount of loss in a windstorm have been installed or implemented.”

In other words, insurance providers must offer premium discounts to Florida homeowners who have installed wind mitigation techniques designed to limit wind and storm damage to their homes. Impact windows and doors fall into this category, as they are designed to withstand damage from high winds and flying debris.

Not only will they spare you significant home damage and repairs after a storm, impact windows and doors also can save you money on your premium. According to an NBC News report, installing impact windows cost an average of $4,000. Homeowners who live in wind-prone areas - including the Tampa Bay area - could see a 10-15% discount on their policy for wind protection upgrades.

Requirements for Insurance Discount

Insurance discounts can vary between providers, so it’s advised to consult with your insurer before you install impact windows or doors. Your insurance agent will be able to tell you about any available incentives or discounts once your impact windows are installed. You can also use the Florida Wind Insurance Saving Calculator to estimate your potential savings.

To receive a discount on your premium, the following information is required according to Olympus Insurance:

  • A wind mitigation inspection report on file with your insurance company
  • The chosen mitigation technique must cover all openings (i.e.windows) on your home
  • The discount only appliances to wind damage included your homeowner’s insurance policy
  • The impact windows and doors must comply with the Florida Building Code.
  • Discounts don’t apply to mobile homes
