What You Need to Know About Warranties

Are you in the market for new windows and doors for your home? When shopping for windows and doors, it’s important to look beyond the cost and aesthetics; you also need to do research on how to best protect your investment. Protection can be anything from product warranties to a guarantee of workmanship from your chosen window installer. You want to ensure the quality of your new windows and doors not just for today, but for years to come!

Warranty coverage on your new windows and doors is important for a variety of reasons. However, the main reason is long-term support from the manufacturer and installer for your investment in your home. There are two primary warranties: product warranty and guarantee of workmanship.

Product Warranty

A product warranty covers manufacturer defects. Most product warranties cover replacement parts if any components break or malfunction due to manufacturer defect including:

  • Failed glass seals in an insulated glass unit
  • Defective hardware
  • Warping frames

Generally, manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty for vinyl windows and a 20/10 warranty on wood windows. A 20/10 warranty covers 20 years on the glass and 10 years on all other components. Keep in mind that product warranties do not cover damages from abuse, acts of God (fire, hail, windstorms), and failure to properly maintain.

Guarantee of Workmanship

Guarantee of workmanship, or installation warranty, can vary greatly between companies. Some only offer a one-year warranty on installation and workmanship. Other  companies, including The Window Depot, offer a lifetime workmanship warranty. When shopping for windows and doors, you should look for a five- to 10-year warranty, as most installation-related issues occur within the first couple of years.

Most workmanship warranties include:

  • Service call and diagnosis charges
  • Cost and installation parts covered under the manufacturer’s warranty
  • Any defects resulting from the window or door installation

Installation warranties do not cover failed maintenance tasks on your part, such as cleaning tracks or caulking, as these can hinder the product from operating effectively.

Remember, all window and door  warranties are not created equal. Warranties are only as good as the company offering them, so it’s important to choose a window installation company with a solid reputation in the community and with many years of experience.
