How the Materials Shortage Affects Vinyl Supply

When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted life as we knew it, all industries were affected including the construction industry. However, with the current material and supply situation, the building industry may have had it simpler in 2020.

While vaccines and reopening workplaces have replaced physically distancing and plant shutdowns, the construction industry is grappling with unprecedented material shortages and other lingering COVID-related issues. These shortages result in added stress on the construction industry - especially those working in windows and new construction.

According to the Associated General Contractors of America, the shortage of raw materials has affected a variety of construction materials across all disciplines. While COVID-related issues contributed to rising raw materials prices and longer lead times, mother nature also played a pivotal role. In February 2021, the ice storms that plagued Texas also derailed work at resin-producing petrochemical plants in Houston. The deep freeze not only halted the production of the “building blocks” for construction resins but also damaged the equipment necessary to create these building materials. The list of affected products includes vinyl siding, vapor barriers, paints, coatings, and materials packaging.

Manufacturers and suppliers who rely on these materials are delivering at only 50-70% allocations. Combined with historically high lead times, many home renovation projects will likely be delayed or postponed. While industry analysts believe production will increase later in the year, there’s no timeline for reduced prices or delivery times.

In addition to the lack of material and supply resources, the industry is also facing a labor storage. According to the American Supply Association, distributors have adapted to the reduced production rates. However, suppliers are still dealing with the increased demand for products and materials. Coupled with the current skilled trade shortage, it’s the perfect storm for an industry crisis. Supply will eventually catch up with demand, but that process could take months.
