Home Security and Your Windows

Taking safety measures to protect your home (as well as the people and belongings in it) can be a little overwhelming. While burglary and break-in rates are dropping every year, FBI data shows that a burglary occurs in the United States about once every 30 seconds.

Installing replacement windows protects your home from more than the elements - they also provide an added layer of security for your family and possessions. New windows come equipped with double locks and interlocks double-strength glass for high impact resistance, making it very unlikely for burglars to break in.

However, you want the additional peace of mind that you and your family will be safe. To help increase your window security, here are some tips from This Old House:

Lock Your Windows

As obvious as it sounds, check the condition of your window locks (even if you have recently installed windows). To increase security, replace old or broken locks and make sure they stay locked when the window is closed. To further secure your windows, look into aftermarket locks

such as pin locks or hinged web locks. Pin locks prevent burglars from lifting a window, and wedge locks prevent double-hung windows from being opened.

Install Window Bars

Even if the window is smashed or broken, physical barriers like bars or mesh can impede entry into your home. Check with your local municipality before installing security bars, as you may need to keep the window clear to adhere to fire codes.

Improve Your Outdoor Lighting

A few strategically outdoor lighting fixtures can often deter potential intruders. For example, floodlights ensure that someone attempting to break in through a window has nowhere to hide if caught. Also, consider motion-activated security lights if you’re distracted by bright outside lights. Finally, for added security (and investment), you can install a smart motion sensor light that sends an alert to your phone when activated.

Use DIY Home Security Devices

Give your windows some extra protection by installing DIY home security window sensors. These devices ensure that you and your family are alerted should there be a break-in attempt. Even without professional monitoring, you can have an alarm trigger when your windows have been compromised.

Invest in a Professionally-Monitored Security System

While DIY systems offer security, you may want peace of mind as a professionally installed and monitored home alarm system. Many home security companies offer varying levels of protection, from basic door and window sensors to smart HD security cameras with facial recognition.
