Window Maintenance Tips

Installing beautiful, functioning, and stylish windows go a long way toward updating your home’s aesthetic and value. However, how you maintain and care for your windows affects how long they last, how good they look, and how well they function.

Many times, a window’s lifespan is shortened due to improper use or lack of maintenance. However, with the proper upkeep, you can keep your windows looking fresh and new for decades to come.

To keep your interior and exterior windows looking and functioning at their best, follow these tips.

Operate the Windows Properly

Unbeknownst to them, many homeowners cause damage to their windows by using them the wrong way. Over time, this misuse puts added stress on the windows, potentially shortening their lifespan. When you have your replacement windows installed, ask the installer to show you how to operate the windows correctly. If your windows are already installed, search for online videos for your specific window type.

Clean the Glass Frequently

When the glass of your window is clean, it helps drain them of moisture. Stored moisture not only gives your windows a cloudy look but also causes damage over time. To correctly clean your windows, use glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive materials and cleaners - they won’t get your windows any cleaner and could damage them.

Clean the Interior Vinyl Frame Regularly

If not cleaned properly, your window’s vinyl frame can become discolored - and you don’t want your nice new window surrounded by a dirty frame. Use a gentle soapy water solution to clean the vinyl; acid or abrasive cleaners will damage the vinyl.

Periodically Clean the Exterior Vinyl Frame

In addition to the interior frame, clean the exterior vinyl frame a few times a year. Follow the same cleaning precautions - no harsh abrasives or acidic cleaners - as they can discolor or damage the window seals. Remember to rinse off the soapy residue when done cleaning, as it can leave an attractive and cloud coating on your windows.

Keep the Tracks Clean

When dirt, dust, and other debris build up in your window tracks, it decreases the efficiency of your windows. Not only that, it can cause your weatherstripping, locks, hinges, and rollers to wear out quicker. To keep your windows working correctly:

  • Clean your window tracks every time you clean the glass.

  • Clean the tracks before you clean the windows, as a glass cleaner can drip down and mix with dirt, resulting in a harder to clean muddy mess.

  • Wipe the tracks down with soapy water solution, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove any residue.

Lubricate the Hardware

Lubricating the hardware (i.e., locks, hinges, and rollers) is essential to keep your windows working correctly.

  • Before you lubricate, wipe down the hardware with soapy water and rinse off any soap residue.

  • Use silicone-based lubricants, not petroleum-based, for hinges and any other moving parts.

  • Lubricate your hardware any time you feel your window isn’t operating as smoothly as it should.
