Ways To Childproof Your Windows

Your children are always at the forefront of your mind. When they're at home, at school, or even when you are out in public with them, their whereabouts are of the utmost importance to you. And this has much to do with your concern for their safety and well-being.

Accidents often happen around your own home more frequently than when you are out and about. One of the more common causes of child endangerment is windows on a home not suitable for childproofing or lack of childproofing altogether.

The simple efforts of childproofing the windows on your home prevent the unthinkable from happening to your young ones. Consider these concepts if you are a parent and are either replacing your windows, building a new home, or looking to better childproof your windows!

What To Consider To Childproof Home Windows

Window Screens Are Fragile - Too many parents believe that if they put up window screens, they act like a baby gate. They do not! Window screens pop off extremely easily and can tear with enough force from a child.

Blinds and Drapes Have Cords - This may be obvious, but in the hustle and bustle of moving into a new home, you may forget to tie up any low-hanging drawstrings on blinds or drapes. Be sure to do so, as these are a strangling hazard.

Remove Casement Window Cranks - Casement windows and awning windows operate by a mechanical crank with a handle, and many even have locks on the window panes themselves. Simply remove the cranks when they are closed, so a child has no way of opening them!

Install Window Locks - If you have sliding windows or other easily opened window styles in your home, consider putting a baby lock on them. Many contemporary windows already have key-based locks on them, but there are many baby locks on the market for various window styles.

Apply A Window Film - If a child cannot figure out how to open a window they have set their sights on, they may try to break it! A window film is a transparent urethane covering that adheres to the glass, preventing it from shattering and causing injury.

Prevent Stacking - Clearing clutter and other items around a window area that a child could stack in an attempt to scale will keep them safe as well. This is not only to prevent their escape but also to prevent them from falling from their make-shift ladder.
