Bug-Proof Your Doors and Windows

Summer has arrived, along with the good and bad that comes with the season! You might be ready to throw the doors and windows open for a breath of fresh air but wait. One thing most people agree on is that bugs don't belong indoors. They bring along risks, painful stings, itchiness, and even create unsanitary conditions.

Follow these tips to protect your home from those pests that love to sneak in with the summer air.

Seal Your Doors

Examine your entry doors carefully, and you might notice how many unsealed gaps there are, making an easy path for bugs to enter. Install a solid steel or aluminum threshold under the door to keep insects from crawling in. Take the extra step to add a door sweep to help cover the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold. Finally, you can add weatherstripping to the perimeter of the frame to prevent bugs from entering on the sides or top of the door.

Seal Your Windows

Because our insect friends are so tiny, many can enter through cracks or holes around your windows that are virtually invisible to you. Carefully inspect your windows, fill holes and gaps around the frames, and any air intake or exhaust grills with caulk. Caulk is a quick and easy fix because it is relatively inexpensive and straightforward to use.

Add Screens

If you love having fresh air streaming through your windows, choose a fine screen to keep out those pesky insects. They will stay outside, where they belong, and you will still have the fresh air coming into your home. If you already have screens on your windows and doors, check them for tears or gaps in the corners to ensure they are doing their job.

Keep it Clean

Don't make your home too appealing for bugs by giving them easy access to their favorite things: food and water. If your home is cluttered or dirty, bugs will make themselves right at home. Instead, store your food in airtight containers and quickly clean up food spills and crumbs. Keep an eye on your pet's food, too, if it is in an area of the home different from where humans consume food.

Take Out the Trash

Finally, your trash can is a haven for hungry insects and other pests. Send them packing by storing your food waste properly. Use only one garbage can in the home for food waste and empty it nightly. When the trash goes out to exterior receptacles, seal the bags tightly and make sure your outdoor trash cans have secure lids on them. Clean and sanitize all of your trash receptacles regularly.
