Window Insulation

At this point in the winter, the cold season has set in, and we are willing to do just about anything to keep our homes warm and avoid feeling the chill.

However, did you know that an estimated 25% of the heat in your home escapes through the windows? Insulating your windows is one of the best ways to save energy and keep your home at a comfortable temperature in the winter. Here are a few ways to insulate your windows.

Window Repairs

Start by checking your windows for leaky spots. One way to do this is to move a lit candle around your windows on a windy day. If the flame flickers, you have a draft. Patch drafty spots with weatherstripping or caulk the cracked areas to create a tighter seal.

Window Insulator Kits

Sold at a local hardware store, these can often do an excellent job of keeping out drafts for a low price. In addition, they are very quick and easy to install to winterproof your windows.

Thermal Curtains

Another simple option is to switch out your curtains in the winter months. A variety of heavy, thermally lined drapes that block cool air effectively are available on the market. While they are more of an investment at first, you can use them year after year. You might even enjoy the change of décor in winter in addition to the energy savings!

Cellular Shades

If you like using window coverings to conserve energy, an alternative to winterizing with thermal curtains is cellular shades. The design of honeycomb cellular shades provides the same insulating benefits as curtains but can be made in custom sizes and colors to fit your specific window. Remember to lower the shades at night when it is coldest and open them during the day to let the sun warm the interior of your home.

Storm Windows

Installing your storms in winter and taking them off to put your screens back in nice weather is already on your winter preparation to-do list. But if your windows did not come with storms, you can purchase new ones and add them anytime to help tackle cool air drafts.

Use Window Wells

Another great way to insulate your home is to cap your basement window wells with covers. In addition to trapping the heat and preventing drafts, covering your window wells will also block moisture from seeping in.

Replace Your Windows

You may find that no matter what you do, the cold air is clearly seeping through your windows. If your old, leaky windows are causing uncomfortable drafts, it is time to consider window replacement. Replacing your windows might have the most significant impact on preventing drafts and saving energy. In addition, recent years have brought significant improvements in the overall energy efficiency of home windows. Look for the ENERGY STAR© rating to verify the energy efficiency of the windows you purchase.
