What is the Best Way to Deal with a Broken Window?

The crack of glass has a signature sound that makes any homeowner's heart drop. Whether your window is completely shattered or cracked, dealing with a broken window is a massive chore.

Ideally, a window professional will come out to replace your window quickly, restoring your home's safety, energy efficiency, and integrity. But we all know there is a window of time between the crack of the glass and the new installation. So what is the best way to deal with a broken window?

Safety First

First, for the safety of the people in and around your home, you must clean the area safely. Create a perimeter around the area where the broken glass has fallen. Then, protect yourself with long sleeves, pants, safety goggles, good shoes, and thick gloves.

Clean Up the Mess

The best way to pick up broken glass is to use newspaper to surround the larger pieces and place them in garbage bags. Layer several garbage bags inside each other to prevent the glass from poking through. Once you have picked up the bigger chunks, sweep the area to get the smaller pieces and shards and place them in the garbage bags. Then, vacuum the area carefully several times to ensure you get every last bit. Finally, wipe hard surfaces with a damp paper towel to pick up any stray, tiny pieces of glass.

Secure the Window

If your preferred window service cannot come immediately, you must temporarily secure the window. This process will depend on the size of the window, the location in your home, and your area's climate. If the damage to your window is a small hole or chip, you can patch the area with clear nail polish. For a crack, you can run super glue down the damaged area. Once the glue is dry, secure it with tape on both sides of the window. If the entire window is broken, filling the opening with plywood is ideal for security and keeping the elements outside.

File an Insurance Claim

Once you have cleaned up the mess and secured the window, it is time to call your insurance company. Whether the damage is a result of natural elements or a rogue baseball, your insurance adjuster will be able to advise you on the best course of action and related deductibles.
