Exterior Home Maintenance To-Dos for This Spring

 


For many homeowners, spring means it is time to focus on the home's exterior. From dusting off the patio furniture to pruning plants and bushes, there is a long to-do list this time of year. Here is a list of exterior home maintenance tasks and tips to help you check off your to-do list and enjoy the season!

 

Tighten the Trim 

Check the wood trim around your house's windows, doors, railings, and decks. Use a screwdriver or drill to tighten up the connections if necessary. Doing this early in spring will give you a leg up before rain damages the exposed wood.

 

Replace Siding or Trim 

As you inspect your trim, you might find some boards that have begun to rot or crumble. If so, replace and repaint the trim immediately. Repainting an entire section to match the color seamlessly might be necessary.

 

Wash the Trim  

If you find evidence of dirt or moss stains around the exterior siding of your house when you are checking for damage, it is essential to clean it off. Simply wipe down the siding with mild soap and a rag.

 

Recaulk Windows and Doors 

Inspect and caulk around your home's doors and windows annually. Caulking the cracks will help your home's energy efficiency and save you money on heating costs year-round.

 

Check the Windows 

Open and close all your windows to ensure they open easily and seal tightly. If either is an issue, check the weather stripping to see if it needs to be replaced.

 

Repair Window Screens 

Keep critters and bugs out by ensuring your window screens are in good condition. If you find a small hole in a screen, you can fix it with a dab of household cement. Use masking tape to hold the screen together on one side for larger tears and apply the household cement with a putty knife.

 

Clean the Window and Screens 

Give your windows and screens a good cleaning and let more natural light into your home. Mix dish soap, vinegar, and water to remove dirt on the exterior of your windows. Scrub until it lathers, and then rinse with water. For interior windows, most people prefer a window cloth or cleaner to limit the mess.

 

Wash your screens by combining water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Remove the screens and spray the mixture on them. Then, rinse well and let the screens dry outside before reinstalling them.
