When Should You Replace Your Windows?

While things are improving from just one year ago, Americans are still spending more time than ever at home. Since the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 42 percent of Americans are currently working from home full-time, according to research by Stanford University. Remote work is likely to remain a permanent part of our labor landscape.

With all that extra time spent at home, you may have noticed additional home improvement projects that need to be completed. Home improvement projects can be costly and time-consuming, so it’s easy to put off some projects - including replacing your old, worn-out windows.

But how do you know when it’s necessary to replace your windows? Here are some tell-tale signs:

  • Outside noise. If you’re constantly hearing the sounds of traffic or your neighbors, chances are your windows currently provide little protection from outside noise. New double-pane replacement windows insulated with Argon gas can help decrease the sounds of the outdoors. This is especially important if you live in a high-traffic area, such as a busy road or a school.

  • Drafty windows. If you feel a draft when your windows are closed, it’s time to consider new windows. Drafts occur for various reasons, including faulty seals and poor installation. Drafty windows also dramatically change your home’s overall temperature, causing your air conditioner to work twice as hard to keep your home cool and comfortable. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, Reducing drafts with new windows can save you up to 20 percent on your utility bill.

  • Decreased window function. Improperly installed windows can develop balance issues, making them difficult to open, close, and lock. Rusting and rotting windows can also be a challenge to operate. If you’re unable to close or lock your windows properly, it impacts the security of your home. Most thieves gain access to homes through a compromised window.

  • Condensation buildup. If your windows are fogged or frosted, moisture has settled between the layers of glass and your seals have failed. When your seals fail, the window’s energy efficiency is now gone. Additionally, condensation can cause soft, chipped, or water-damaged window frames. Soft frames indicate moisture build-up and rot and are likely beyond repair.
