How to Clean Window Screens

Spring has sprung, and with the change of season comes spring cleaning. Are your windows looking dull and dirty? This is the time of year that homeowners often take on the tedious task of window cleaning. As you prepare for the job, remember, no matter how clean and streak-free you get the window glass, your view of the sunny outdoors will be muted if you skip cleaning those window screens.

So how do you get your window screens crystal clean this spring?

Remove the screens

It is easiest to clean the screens when placed flat on towels. You may want to remove screens one room at a time so that it is easier to return the screens to their proper location once they are clean. If not, plan a system such as marking them with a Sharpie Marker to remember where the screens go.

Vacuum

Remove loose debris such as dust, pollen, and spider webs with a vacuum. Move the vacuum gently over the screen using the upholstery brush attachment if you have one. Vacuum one side completely, then flip the screen over to do the other side.

Wash with Soapy Water

Mix ¼ cup of all-purpose cleaner with ½ gallon of water in a bucket. Lift the screen to gently wash both sides with a sudsy sponge or microfiber cloth. For extremely stubborn dirt, use a soft-bristled brush to clean the screen.

Rinse

Rinse the soapy water from the screens before it has a chance to dry completely. Make sure to have your hose set on a gentle spray. If the spray is too powerful, you can risk loosening the screen from the spline. If rinsing with a hose is not an option, your shower will do the trick!

Dry and Reinstall

Once the screens are rinsed, dry them with a clean, dry towel. Make sure to dry the frame of the screen as well. Your screens should look shiny, clean, and new!

Maintenance

With some simple routine maintenance, you can keep your screens looking fresh and clean between deep cleanings. Simply use a vacuum extender attachment to vacuum the screens to remove dust and pollen.
