How to Tell if a Window Seal is Broken

If your home is outfitted with double-pane windows, you will undoubtedly run into a moment where you wonder if a window seal is broken. But how can you tell if a window seal is broken?

A double-pane window is constructed of two panes of glass rather than one. Most homes have double-pane windows because they insulate your home better than single-pane windows. The improved insulation is a result of two qualities. First, there is more material between the inside of the house and the outside of the home. Second, argon gas is installed between the panes to boost the window's superior insulation qualities.

The primary way to tell if your window seal is broken on your double pane windows is if there is moisture between the window panes. When seals work correctly, the argon gas acting as insulation stays between the panes, and the window appears clear. When the seal breaks, moisture gets trapped between the panes. As a result, windows appear foggy, cloudy, or impossible to clean. While condensation is not always a sign of window seal failure, misty moisture in-between glass panes can signify a window seal problem.

A second way to tell that you need to repair your window seals is if you are experiencing drafts in your windows. Properly functioning windows do not allow cold air to waft into your home. One way to test for drafts is to put a wet hand up to your window. If you feel cold air drafting in, your seal is not working correctly. Again, it is important to note that your hardware might be cold because it is made of metal and conducts the outdoor temperature.

Another way to detect broken window seals is if your home is not maintaining a consistent indoor temperature. Your windows help to keep the outdoor air out and the heat or air conditioning in. So if your temperatures fluctuate or you have a skyrocketing heat bill, window seal failure is a likely culprit.

Finally, windows that don't open and close properly or have visible damage strongly indicate that your seals are broken. Damage is one of the first ways your windows show their age. If you notice chipped or peeling paint, mold, or mildew, you will want to consider a total frame replacement for your windows.
